2009 Halloween Events in Chapel Hill & Carrboro
- Homegrown Halloween returns to Downtown Chapel Hill - Sat. Oct. 31st. The shared effort among the Town, University and Downtown Businesses aims to return Halloween on Franklin Street to its roots as a small town community gathering and to reduce crowd sizes. The event attracted an enormous crowd of 80,000 in 2007 and was greatly reduced to 35,000 last year. There will be limited access to the Central Business District and residential areas around it. From 7pm to midnight, no vehicular traffic will be allowed on Franklin Street from Raleigh St. to Roberson St., on Columbia Street from Cameron Ave. to Rosemary St., and on Raleigh Street from Cameron Ave. to E. Franklin St. No alcoholic beverages will be allowed in the closed area. Alcohol checkpoints will be in place at the event and DWI enforcements will take place on the outskirts of Chapel Hill. Parking will essentially be unavailable downtown. There will be no shuttle busses, although Safe-Ride busses will operate for UNC-Chapel Hill students. All bars & restaurants will not permit entry or re-entry after 1am and alcohol sales will be restricted after 1am.
- The Annual Carrboro Halloween Carnival - Sat. Oct. 31st, 6:00-8:30pm at the Carrboro Town Commons Market 301 W. Main Street, Carrboro, NC 27510. This is a free family event, (919) 918-7372. Activities include a cake walk, Merlin and his owl, 20-30 games for children such as Go Fishing, Bean Bag Toss & Tic Tac Toe, with prizes like toys or cupcakes. Also, hot apple cider and popcorn will be for sale. Folks of all ages come out, most in costume.
- Scare-o-lina Skies Family Edition - Sat. Oct. 31st, 1:30pm at Morehead Planetarium 250 E. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC 27514. A unique Halloween version of the popular Carolina Skies show, investigating interesting myths behind well-known constellations. Family Edition is a milder version of Scare-o-lina Skies and is a perfect choice for elementary school age children and their families. Admission is $6 for adults and $5 for students & seniors, (919) 962-1236.
- Laser Halloween - Sat. Oct. 31st 11:30am at Morehead Planetarium 250 E. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC 27514. Remember the chills you feel when you hear scary organ music? Morehead Planetarium and Science Center’s special program Laser Halloween amplifies that experience with a stunning laser light show! Admission is $9.50 for adults and $7.50 for UNC students & Morehead members, (919) 962-1236.
- Magician Michael Casey - Sat. Oct. 31st 9:00pm at The Crunkleton Bar 320 W. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27516, (919) 969-1125. A master of ‘close-up’ magic, Michael’s talents will amaze you.
