Leaf Collection for Town of Chapel Hill Residents

mulch compost or mulch for gardeningleaf collection

From the middle of October through the middle of February, the Town of Chapel Hill will collect and haul away all leaves raked to the curb in piles.  They also will deliver leaves to those requesting them for compost or mulch for gardening.  This program helps keep leaves out of the landfills, and we all benefit by saving landfill space and making use of a valuable material.

The Chapel Hill Public Works crews start at one end of town and make a complete circuit at least three times during the period from October through February to give all residents the same number of pick ups.  They recommend that you rake your leaves as early in the season as practical.  This will help them to provide at least one collection for the entire Town prior to the Christmas season.  The length of their collection cycle depends upon the number of leaf piles and the timing of their placement.  There are four important things to remember about this program.

  • Chapel Hill Public Works cannot make special pick-ups.
  • The leaf truck will collect leaves in your neighborhood at least once before Thanksgiving. The exact schedule will depend on the weather, the amount of leaf fall and the number of people participating.
  • Not everyone will get a leaf pick-up during Thanksgiving week or during Christmas week.
  • Leaves placed in bags will not be collected.

Please check the Town of Chapel Hill web page here for their weekly collection schedule, daily status updates and leaf collection map, and for other ways to dispose of leaves.

What is early voting?
Early voting, also known as one-stop absentee voting, allows any registered voters to cast their ballots in person prior to the Election Day.  This is a convenient way to do your civic duty having more freedom in choosing when you will vote and voting in less crowded polling places.

When and where can I go to vote early?
Early voting will be available Thursday, October 16th to Saturday, November 1st. Times and locations vary by county. The North Carolina Board of Elections every so often updates it’s listing of sites for one-stop early voting for North Carolina Counties.

Can I register and vote the same day?
Yes and no.  The North Carolina Voting System allows same-day registration during the early voting period only; it is not allowed on the Primary Day or on Election Day.  Through November 1st, you can register and vote by going to a one-stop voting site in your county of residence with the proper identification to take full advantage of same-day registration.

Do I need to bring identification to vote?
Yes, if you are a newly registered voter.  Bring a drivers license, other government issued ID, social security card, or utility bill for identification purposes if necessary.  If you’ve registered and voted at your current address previously, you will not need to bring identification.  However, it is always a good idea to bring proof of residency, just in case.

What if I miss the deadline to register?  A North Carolina resident who is qualified to vote but who misses the 25-day deadline for voter registration may register and vote at the Early Voting location.  The citizen must (1) go to the Early Voting location during the Early Voting period, (2) fill out a voter registration application, and (3) provide proof of residency by showing the elections official an appropriate form of identification with the citizen’s current name and current address.
